Precision Aerospace Engineers and suppliers of engineered solutions to water monitoring

Water Quality Monitoring

AT Engineering work closely with private and government organisations to provide bespoke engineered solutions to their water monitoring needs.

We have worked with the Environment Agency and Defra to develop a wide range of monitoring solutions on projects such as Demonstration Test Catchments (rural diffuse pollution) and portable monitoring for the water framework directive.

We have also completed projects for Thames and Wessex Water, Veolia and United Utilities, and developed close links with academic and research institutions such as ADAS and the universities of Reading, Portsmouth, East Anglia and Lancaster.

Typical environmental engineering projects have presented the development and production of flow-thru cells for sample collection and transmission of analysis data, passive water monitoring solutions to monitor water pollution, and the design/manufacture of water monitoring stations which can be small, portable stations through to fully operational mobile water monitoring stations built into trailer chassis.

Working alongside Portsmouth University and South West Water (SWW), A-T Engineering have acted as principal engineering partner in the development of a new, revolutionary passive water sampling device, called the Chemcatcher ™.

Traditional spot water sampling techniques no longer cut it where difficult-to-detect pollutants are concerned. With 21st century pollution targets, better informed attitudes to serial polluters and improved water quality sampling technologies available, it was time to bring passive water sampling techniques up to date.

Detecting Elusive Water Pollutants and Polluters

Specific types of pollutants, such as acid herbicides and pesticides, have a tendency to flush through water ways, highlighting spot water quality sampling as inadequate for the task at hand. A longer exposure period is required – typically 2 or more weeks at a time, in order to accumulate. The Chemcatcher ™ passive water sampling device does exactly that: in situ for several weeks or more, allowing elusive pollutants to accumulate on the binding surface of the Chemcatcher’s ™ sampling membrane.

A-T Engineering have recently completed the build of two state of the art water quality monitoring/testing trailers on behalf of the Environment Agency’s, National Water Quality Instrumentation Service (NWQIS).  A-T Engineering have worked closely with NWQIS from an environmental engineering perspective, from initial design through to delivery, producing a unique, modular water quality monitoring & testing solution.

Having worked with the NWQIS on a wide array of environmental engineering and water quality monitoring projects over many years, their mechanical expertise has been central to the development of a wide range of mobile, transportable and portable high specification water quality monitoring & testing systems.

Wessex Water had commissioned the NWQIS to provide a mobile water quality monitoring platform  which will be used as part of their extensive programme of pro-active water quality monitoring & testing.  Water quality monitoring involves the testing of parameters such as phosphorus, nitrates and ammonium.  Data from the water quality monitors are fed back to Wessex Water in real time via a bespoke sensor web network

A-T Engineering manufacture bespoke, non-standard sized kiosks, cabinets and enclosures designed for environmental sampling and water quality monitoring purposes. We can also build custom, one-off cabinets for other purposes, built exactly to the customers’ specification.

A-T Engineering approach each kiosk, cabinet or enclosure client afresh, listening to the requirements and carefully examining each facet of the kiosk’s specification. Our environmental kiosks, cabinets and enclosures are manufactured as bespoke items, taking into account dimensions, accommodated technology, intended environment, budget and other factors.

Our most popular and widely used kiosks/cabinets are manufactured from Aluminium. These are applicable for many situations such as environmental water monitoring kiosks, control panel kiosks, electrical housing cabinets, analytic equipment cabinets, pump housing cabinets and telemetry equipment enclosures.

We also manufacture GRP, stainless steel and steel kiosks/cabinets/enclosures, each of these materials will suit certain conditions and environments. A-T Engineering are happy to discuss new, unique and challenging requirements for the design and manufacture of these increasingly popular kiosks/cabinets/enclosures.

Meteor Communications, a client of A-T Engineering,  manufacture an innovative 3G camera for use in remote locations. Working in partnership with we developed, prototyped and manufactured a robust pillar housing to enable their innovative 3G camera to be quickly and easily deployed. This allows it to be used in flood defence infrastructure.

We have also worked together with the Environment Agency, who had a vision and specification that the 3G camera & housing system had to fulfil.

Quick-Turnaround Prototype Machining

Working from an initial, basic and incomplete brief, A-T Engineering developed and manufactured a series of prototype 3G camera housing units at short notice, which enabled the customer to visualise and refine the required final solution.

Over the course of three months, three different iterations of the pillar were developed, manufactured and tested, which involved site visits to understand the intended locations and performance of the housing. Design meetings were conducted with the Environment Agency and joint development sessions were planned in order to quickly progress to a final production camera housing.
